Illegal Immigrant “Self-Deports” in Bizarre Mistake

Salvadoran Illegal ‘Self-Deports’ After Border Blunder

In a stunning twist that underscores the absurdity and moral confusion of America’s immigration policies, a Salvadoran illegal immigrant and DACA recipient inadvertently “self-deported” after making a wrong turn into Mexico — and is now slated to be returned to his country of origin. The incident has ignited fresh debates around illegal immigration, border enforcement, and the consequences of willfully flouting U.S. law.

According to NBC San Diego, the man, whose name has not been publicly released, was driving near the U.S.-Mexico border in Southern California when he mistakenly entered the southbound lanes into Tijuana. Upon attempting to re-enter the U.S. without proper documentation, Mexican authorities detained him. It was a move that revealed the fragility of his supposed “status” in America and the loopholes that have enabled many to live in the U.S. illegally under the guise of DACA protections.

The individual had been living in the U.S. since childhood under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, an Obama-era policy that defers deportation for those brought into the country illegally as minors. However, as conservatives have long argued, DACA does not grant lawful status, nor does it immunize recipients from consequences should they leave the U.S. or violate immigration rules. That reality just came crashing down.

What makes this case particularly striking is how the man effectively triggered his own deportation. Once he crossed into Mexico — even by mistake — he relinquished any legal protection DACA had afforded him. Re-entry into the United States without authorization is considered a violation of immigration law, nullifying his DACA eligibility and placing him in the crosshairs of enforcement agencies.

Reports from The Gateway Pundit noted that Mexican authorities detained the man for attempting to re-enter the U.S. illegally. Since he had no proper papers, and with DACA protections forfeited, there were no legal mechanisms to shield him from repatriation. The Mexican government has reportedly opted to return him to El Salvador, his original homeland.

Hernandez’s attorney, Valerie Sigamani, alleges that after being detained by Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), agents demanded a probe from the Dreamer in exchange for being allowed to return to the United States.

“One of the officials told him, ‘Well, if you pay us $800, we’ll forgive everything, and we’ll let you into the United States with no problem,’” Sigamani said.

Sigimani told NBC News 7 San Diego that she has filed a complaint with the FBI in an effort to shield her client from deportation. She also revealed that Hernandez is no longer protected by DACA.

“And when that happened (missing the turn), he lost everything, basically,” his attorney Valerie Sigamani said, noting that anyone with DACA must have prior approval to leave the U.S.

This bizarre episode is not only ironic but also instructive. It underscores the lax enforcement and moral relativism that have defined the Biden administration’s border policies. President Biden has consistently signaled leniency toward illegal aliens, fueling a massive wave of unlawful crossings and overstays. Yet even with these leniencies, reality has a way of asserting itself — often in unexpected and uncomfortable ways.

From a conservative Christian perspective, this story serves as a parable of consequences. Romans 13 reminds us that governmental authority exists to uphold order and justice. A society that ignores its own laws, or selectively enforces them based on political whims, undermines the very concept of justice. When someone lives unlawfully for years, banking on loopholes and political favor, they should not be surprised when reality catches up.

DACA itself remains one of the most contentious immigration policies in recent memory. While it tugs at the heartstrings with its focus on children and education, it skirts the deeper issue: rewarding unlawful entry. Programs like DACA do not offer true legal stability — they only delay the inevitable. This case, tragic as it may be for the individual involved, reinforces the importance of having a legal immigration system grounded in fairness, order, and national sovereignty.

Moreover, it exposes the precarious condition of many illegal immigrants who rely on activist narratives and sympathetic media coverage rather than actual law. The corporate media will undoubtedly portray this incident as a miscarriage of justice — an innocent young man victimized by harsh policy. But the truth is that the young man took a gamble living in the U.S. without legal status and has now lost that bet.

Conservatives have long pushed for a return to merit-based immigration — one that honors those who follow the legal process and respects national borders. In contrast, open-border policies have created a shadow class of people living in limbo, exploited by political elites for votes and cheap labor while left vulnerable to bureaucratic missteps and legal gray zones.

There is also a broader spiritual lesson here. Living outside of God’s ordained structure — whether in law, family, or faith — inevitably leads to disorder. Just as a nation cannot survive with open borders and selective law enforcement, neither can a soul survive without submission to divine authority. Actions have consequences. Sin has a cost. And whether through a wrong turn or a deliberate choice, there is a reckoning.

As this man awaits his return to El Salvador, his story is a sobering reminder: truth matters, laws matter, and so do borders. While we must show compassion and offer the gospel to all, we must also uphold the God-ordained structures that preserve justice, liberty, and national order.
