MSNBC Contributor Implies Violence Against ICE Agents May Be ‘Lawful Right of Self-Defense’
A recent MSNBC segment sparked outrage after a guest contributor appeared to justify violence against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents by labeling such actions as potentially lawful self-defense. The controversial remarks aired during Ali Velshi’s July 13 program and have since drawn sharp criticism from conservatives who say the network is normalizing anti-law enforcement sentiment under the guise of legal analysis.
Lisa Glass, an MSNBC contributor and self-described immigration advocate, ignited controversy when she responded to a discussion about ICE agents allegedly entering homes without warrants. Glass stated, “If a masked individual in plain clothes breaks into your home, the law in many jurisdictions supports the lawful exercise of the right of self-defense.”

Her comments came in the context of growing liberal backlash against border enforcement amid increased deportations and immigration arrests under renewed efforts to control the southern border. Though Glass never explicitly called for violence, many interpreted her remarks—especially when left unchallenged by Velshi—as an implicit endorsement of aggression against federal law enforcement officers.
The reaction from conservative and law enforcement circles was swift and severe. Former ICE Acting Director Tom Homan condemned the comments as “reckless, dangerous, and totally irresponsible.” Homan told The Gateway Pundit, “The job of ICE agents is already dangerous enough. For a national news platform to suggest these agents could be shot at or harmed under some false notion of ‘self-defense’ is appalling.”
The segment has reignited debate about how mainstream media coverage shapes public perceptions of law enforcement, particularly agencies involved in immigration enforcement. Critics argue that left-wing media outlets like MSNBC have repeatedly undermined public trust in ICE by portraying agents as villains rather than officers enforcing duly enacted federal law.
During the exchange, host Ali Velshi appeared to nudge Glass further by posing the question, “Is there not an argument, especially from a legal standpoint, that someone being confronted by an unannounced, masked ICE officer could reasonably perceive a threat and act accordingly?” Rather than push back, Glass elaborated on the idea, citing “stand your ground” laws and the Castle Doctrine in certain states.
Tim Graham, Executive Editor of NewsBusters, observed that MSNBC “once again blurred the lines between commentary and incitement.” He argued that by presenting hypotheticals that lead viewers toward justifying violence against federal agents, the network is “fueling a dangerous environment where law enforcement officers are demonized and potentially endangered.”
This incident is just the latest in a pattern of inflammatory rhetoric broadcast on left-wing media platforms. In 2018, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called ICE detention facilities “concentration camps,” a comparison widely denounced by Jewish leaders and conservatives alike. The resulting narrative has created a hostile climate for ICE officers and contributed to several targeted attacks on their facilities in recent years.
Christian conservatives have voiced strong concerns that such rhetoric betrays a growing cultural hostility to law and order. “Romans 13 makes it clear that governing authorities are established by God, and to rebel against lawful authority is to rebel against God’s design,” stated Pastor David Hale of Liberty Fellowship Church. “To suggest that ICE agents—who risk their lives to enforce the law—are deserving of violent retaliation is a gross moral failure.”
Despite the backlash, MSNBC has not issued a clarification or apology. Instead, the clip remains live on their website, with Glass doubling down on her comments in follow-up social media posts. “No one is advocating violence,” she wrote, “but people have a right to protect themselves from masked intruders. The law must protect individuals against all threats, including those from rogue agents.”
This explanation has done little to soothe critics who see a disturbing trend of mainstream outlets providing a platform for fringe or inflammatory perspectives, particularly those hostile to the integrity of America’s borders.
Even moderate viewers have begun questioning the tone and content of left-leaning cable news coverage. One former Democrat, now an independent voter, commented online, “I used to trust MSNBC. Now I’m horrified at what they’re pushing. How is this not incitement?”
The issue also underscores the stark divide in American media. While conservative platforms like Fox News and Newsmax consistently highlight the sacrifice and legal authority of ICE, left-leaning outlets increasingly paint immigration enforcement as oppressive, leading to confusion and sometimes even confrontation between civilians and agents on the ground.
Political commentator Eric Thompson remarked, “This is what happens when progressivism becomes untethered from moral law. They twist legal technicalities to justify rebellion against God-ordained authority. It’s spiritual blindness dressed up as legal reasoning.”
The Department of Homeland Security has yet to comment publicly on the MSNBC segment. However, ICE officials privately expressed concern that such rhetoric could result in more agents being injured or killed in the line of duty. Several agents have already reported being harassed or threatened during routine operations in major U.S. cities.
As tensions around immigration continue to escalate heading into the 2026 midterms, media outlets face increasing scrutiny over how their coverage affects real-world behavior. For many conservative Americans, the MSNBC segment was not merely a debate over legal hypotheticals—it was a dangerous endorsement of vigilante justice masquerading as civil rights advocacy.
